The optical calcite blocks were roughly cut with heavy internal hazing and might be unusable as a viking navigational tool example. Product is not clear as seen in product photos.

Bin ein bissl enttäuscht, hab etwas transparentere Steine erwartet wie in den Produktbildern gezeigt, es sind dennoch schöne Rohkristalle daher noch 3 Sterne vergeben

Received two nice pieces of Iceland Spar today. the first one is about 1/2 inch thick and clear enough to read through and provides a great example of the refractive qualities. The second one is twice as thick and while you can somewhat see through it at an angle, it does have some cloudiness to it. Doing some research on this particular crystal formation, the original Iceland Spar’s were mined in Iceland and were practically clear as glass, however it is now mined in various places around the world such as South America, Mexico, and South Africa. The cloudiness in calcite is typically due to presence of other minerals or impurities. While these are great specimens, I would suspect from the cloudiness that these are from one of the other mining locations and not actually from Iceland; however, it would not be a complete rarity to have cloudy specimens from Iceland as well. That is the nature of calcite. Overall, for the price these are two excellent pieces of Iceland Spar and on the next cloudy day, I will venture outside with my spar to see if I can locate the sun well enough to navigate by.

The crystal was very cloudy and could not be used to see the bifiringet property that optical calcite should have. VERY disappointing. It is cloudy with inclusions

This product isn’t transparent! The advertised pictures show the calcite as being clear enough to see through. This is just junk, cheap calcite. As you can see, these are opaque. Do not buy.

The optical calcite advertised is completely clear. The ones I received are not even close. These are by far the worst optical calcite crystals I’ve received from any of the sources I purchased from. DO NOT BUY.

Only bought because all of the pictures showed them as nice and transparent, good for seeing the bifocal effect; however, the blocks sent to me are all cracked and fissured right the way through, making it practically impossible to see anything through them at all. I might try messing about with polishing/breaking them to see if I can get anything more useful, but they look like there’s imperfections all the way through them so that’s going to be pretty unlikely to work, and even if it does they certainly aren’t as they were advertised. If you want three decent sized lumps of something pretty indistinguishable from regular quartz then this is right up your street, but I’m pretty sure you can get it a lot cheaper somewhere else.

It took a very long time to get it, but I was very pleased with the crystals.

Not as clear as I would like it or as clear as was advertised
