I normally use Old Bay seasoning when I cook white fish. Being from New England I don’t think it’s something a lot of home cooks normally use, but I don’t really love fish and the seasoning helps make it a little more palatable to me. And since my can of OB was getting rather low (and probably a little stale, I don’t use a lot) I thought I would give this one a try. I couldn’t really tell the difference.

To me they look, smell, and taste pretty much the same. As others have said, this one might be a little less spicy, but I don’t use a lot anyway and I barely notice the spice. As I said, just a little to take the fishy edge off. And just the fish with fins, shellfish I like just as it is, as long as it’s fresh.

I and a couple of other people tested this side-by-side against the very popular ‘OB’ brand of seafood seasoning, and the results were generally positive.

In the simplest terms, this has more aromatics and a stronger celery seed flavor, while OB was spicier/hot with the inclusion of red and (likely more) black pepper. I’d suggest that it is another one of those regional preferences, since we all knew or interacted with Southern cooks who probably would have considered it too mild, but Midwest and New England chefs that would have liked it.

I can’t say I have a preference in the seafood world, but I can say that this blend has a nice set of aromatics that actually do well with pork and chicken, too. For example, it made for a super-simple coating (blend with panko crumbs and coated) for some pork chops.

I like heat and pepper a lot, but sometimes you miss out on the other flavors in OB because of it. I think this is a great alternative when you want a milder blend with mild seafood (e.g., milk fish, scallops) with lots of interesting aromas that don’t bury the subtle flavors of the food.

I went to culinary school and love to cook. I know how important spices are when cooking and like to always have a good variety of spices on hand. I was looking for a good spice to use on my Mahi Mahi and Salmon and decided to give this a try. This is a good sized container of seafood seasoning for the price. In the past I have used Old Bay and like it but my kids feel like it’s a little too spicy. I used the GranAroma Seafood Seasoning on their salmon this time and they said that it tastes much better. I feel like it does have a good flavor but missed a little of the Old Bay spice. Overall this is a great seasoning for those that don’t like spice at all, which makes it perfect for my kids.

It doesn’t smell like seafood, it’s spicy, salty, I was expecting it to contain some fish stock but no such luck
