When we brought home our large-breed puppy, I knew picking the food was major. Big pups grow fast, joints matter, and I didn’t want to mess that up. Enter this Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy formula — and honestly, it’s been exactly what we needed.

    How it performs:

The first thing I noticed is how enthusiastically our pup gobbles it up. No fuss, no dragging the bowl off uninterested.

After a few weeks, his coat looks sleek and healthy, and the stools have been consistent and firm (which is a real relief considering how many puppy foods caused loose stools for friends’ pups). According to Dog Food Advisor the large-breed puppy formula got a 4.5 star rating.

The kibble size and formulation seem well-suited for a large breed: the bag said it was optimized for growing joints, bones and the calcium/phosphorus ratio for big pups. (Important because large-breed puppies need special nutrition to avoid growth problems.)

Preparation is simple: just measure the recommended amount according to his current weight & age (the bag has a handy chart), and gradually transition from his previous food. Our vet also approved this brand.

He’s active, playful, and his energy level feels right—not over-excited from “junk” nutrition, and not lagging like I’ve seen with lower-quality foods.

    What I like about it:

The #1 ingredient is chicken (or salmon in some versions) — good to see a named meat first.

It supports brain & vision development via DHA from fish oil (important for a pup who loves zoomies and exploring).

Designed specifically for large size adult outcome, which gives me peace of mind he’s getting formula tailored for his growth path, not just generic “puppy” food.

While it’s premium, the price is reasonable for what I’m getting (quality + results).

What to keep an eye on (not deal-breakers):

Because large-breed pups eat more, the bag size / cost will be a bigger investment than small-breed formulas.

As with any change of food, you do need to transition gradually over 7-10 days to avoid tummy upset.

If your pup has known allergies or sensitivities (e.g., to chicken), you’ll want to check the specific version (they have salmon & rice, sensitive-skin versions) to match his needs. Some users on forums noted sensitivities.

    Bottom line:
If you’ve got a large breed puppy and want a food you can trust to support healthy growth, strong bones & joints, and a happy tummy—this Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy formula is a solid choice. Really glad we went with it, and I’d buy it again.

Same great product as in stores but with subscribe and save I get a good bargain PLUS it saves me from a trip to the store. I always have what I need in stock and I don’t have to worry about it being sold out. The discount is helpful too.

Purina just keeps getting more expensive. Good product but for the price I will be looking for a different brand.

We recently switched from another brand because Purina One Plus helps a bit more with our boy’s sometimes sensitive tummy. It’s high in protein, designed for large breed puppies, provides 100% of his nutritional needs, and has no fillers. Our puppy is growing fast, and he eats a ton. We want everything we feed him to have a purpose. Our boy is food driven and he’s not particularly picky, but he really enjoys the tender pieces alongside the crunchy kibble. We love that this food supports bone, brain, joint, and muscle development (to name a few). We’re very happy with this puppy food. He’s never left one kibble in his bowl so must be yummy!

My puppy will be a year old in March. During the last eight months I have changed his food several times because he will not eat. He would fill his mouth up with food and then spit it on the floor. I tried Purina One Plus and he absolutely loves it. He would barely eat once a day but now after he eats, he just sits and stares at the bag because he wants more. Game changer.

This is what our breeder feeds and our Bernese Mtn Dog pup is doing well on it. We add a little water or goat milk before feeding. Big bag lasts a while.

We have always had dogs. Always bought “cheap” dog food. Never thought getting this food would change some of their lives. We purchased a German shepherd and the breeder always used this food and raved about it. We decided to spend the money and purchase the Purina one. We had 2 old dogs that also started eating this food as they all ate together. Our 2 older dogs (14 at the time) came to life within a week. Their coats were soft and not brittle, as what comes with age. They also had so much more energy and we were amazed! They are a few years older and still doing amazing! We mix it with “cheaper” dog food to make the food go a little longer but they are still spry! This is a lot of money for a lot of people including myself but worth every penny!! We would do the same for our children and we should do the same for our animals. So very worth it!

The product is usually good, this one time I bought it, it also came with a bunch of dead moths, with silk, and all inside the food. It probably sat in a warehouse too long. Ive had this problem with dog food and bird food before.Amazon issued a replacement quickly after calling them.

Overall it doesn’t seem any different from any of their other foods, besides minor changes in nutrients. The dogs like it good enough, and they don’t get sick so that’s good. It’s a good food that provides what’s essential, nothing more.
