Starts with a history of tarot then discusses each card separately and includes images of cards from a variety of popular decks to support the discussion. Also includes suggestions for readings and learning more about your cards. Good book for a beginner or even a more experienced practitioner.

This is a beautiful and very well written book. It has a brief history of Tarot, it’s relation to Kaballah, astrology and the like, and an explanation of Tarot symbols. Of course it also gives explanations of each card and different spreads. One of the best things about this book is that it also pictures cards from many decks, an inspiration to those of us who collect decks!

The Complete Illustrated Guide to Tarot by Rachel Pollack is a wonderful book. Pollack has a very engaging style of writing that kept me interested throughout the book. As the title suggests, it’s full of illustrations, but that’s not all! This book covers a wide variety of tarot topics; I learned a lot from this book. Pollack discusses the history of tarot in great detail. The chapter on symbols and structures goes into several topics including pathways on the Tree of Life, the suits and their elements, and tarot and astrology. Part Three is about the cards and discusses the journey of the major arcana, the minor arcana, and the court cards. Part Four gives instructions on doing several different readings, which I found particularly interesting. Part Five is on things to do with the tarot, which teaches you several ways of using tarot cards. I highly recommend this book!

If you subscribe to the view of the mechanical universe and you are convinced reality is simply cause-and-effect you need not bother with this book or any other book on Tarot. If, however, you are prepared to be open minded and see what Tarot and other such disciplines have to offer than Rachel Pollack is the person to read. Having said that, I would not recommend you start with this book. It will do nothing to change your mind if you believe it is all ‘nonsense’. If you decide to see what it is all about read her other books (such as 78 steps to wisdom). You may discover that ‘there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy’. Red Wolf

I bought this book in Hope’s it would be just a cool coffee table book. Well I was wrong!! It is packed with information and it shows a ton of different types of decks (AND LABELS EACH ONE!!) It makes me want to buy a deck when I see a card that I vibe with, and right under each picture is a reference to which deck it is! I thought that was super cool!! Not alot of books do that. But the info in it is totally unusual and worth the buy!!!!! (And I have literally about 30 books on tarot)

More than just an explanation of the cards. This book also breaks down the symbolism, numbers, suits, and elements, as well as how tarot works with astrology, numerology, and other occult traditions. Great for beginners too, because there are also basic instructions on how to read the cards.
