I was a serious skeptic. I viewed essential oils as things that smelled nice, but nothing more. As a professor, I’m inclined to think if things were really medically effective, my doctor would be recommending it. But I’m also a chronic sinus infection sufferer. Usually they take 3-4 weeks to clear up even with antibiotics, and I spend a good two weeks feeling like the walking death. So when I felt the beginnings of a sinus infection the saturday before a big important work trip, I panicked. I finally folded and figured that even if essential oils were just mumbo jumbo, they probably couldnt hurt. I put this into my atomizer and just sat in front of it and breathed in deeply through the nose a couple of times throughout the day. By the end of the first day I was shocked that I was already starting to feel better, not worse. That first infection never got horrible and cleared within four days.
But I believe in science, if even only the small N experiment I might be able to do on myself. So the next time I got the start of a sinus infection I started with the same full court press of pseudoephedrine, nasal spray, and atomized health shield. I started to get better. I removed the health shield, I started to get worse again. I added health shield back into the mix and immediately started to get better again. I thought maybe it was just the humid mist, so I removed health shield and just sat in front of the atomizer mist with no essential oil — I got worse again. You get the picture. It probably wont be published in the New England Journal of medicine, but I am now a firm believer.

I wish I had known about this blend and essential oils earlier. This particular blend really does what it says. It significantly prevents or cuts down any type of germ infection: bacterial, viral, mold spores (some sinus infections are caused by mold). I am prone to sinus infections a couple times a year– most are viral, at least one a year is bacterial(mold I’m not sure). I also get a few head colds and maybe one bacterial ear infection.
I was introduced to Doterra’s On Guard this past spring and was very impressed with how it actually stopped my summer head cold, later a summer viral sinus infection, and an upper respiratory virus for my sister. With the larger MLM companies’ prices being so high, I researched other essential oil companies. Healing Solutions is one of the better ones and this works as good as the On Guard does, but for a fraction of the cost. Shortly after I received this, I started to come down with a head cold. I put a drop on the bottom of my feet every couple of hours (your feet have thicker skin, less prone to irritation) and put in my diffuser for a few days. Many people I knew we’re getting sick with the rainy, cold front weather change. I never developed a full cold and the sniffles were gone a few days. My sister never got sick at all!
As far as the aroma of this, it is very heavy on a cinnamon and clove. Smells actually wonderful in the diffuser— like Autumn & Christmas! With the Doterra’s On Guard, I smell more of the wild orange mixed with cinnamon and clove. Both blends smell nice to me just slightly different. I think Healing Solutions has one that is made with orange essential oil rather than the lemon essential oil. Maybe that smells more like On Guard?
Lastly I’m becoming a bigger believer in more homeopathic, natural medicine. I still believe in and respect mainstream medicine. But if the alternative medicines work, they should be tried first. I already bought a second bottle that I’m giving to my cousin as one of her birthday gifts this coming weekend and I’ll buy a third bottle for my daughter’s birthday in October.
