- Obsidian was so named from its resemblance to a stone found in Ethiopia by Obsius. Rainbow Obsidian is black obsidian that, when polished and exposed to a strong light, shows bands of rainbow colors. Rainbow obsidian is said to be the stone used by Nostradamus to foresee future events. Obsidian is formed when volcanic lava cools very quickly.
- Obsidian is a natural form of volcanic glass , composed of various combinations of basalt, Andesite, Rhyolite, and Trachyte. Really lovely stone heart. Very puffy. Not flat at all. Genuine stone. I am really pleased with this stone heart. Good price too.

If you are looking for a stunning heart stone, this is it. It is simply gorgeous. However, it really was a disappointment to look at this under a blacklight. Initially, I was thrilled because some of the cracks glowed a wonderful green/yellow. I’ll admit that I’m a nerd and look at all my rocks/minerals under long and short UV light–it is a lot of fun!
However, when I looked closer (just my eye, no loupe or microscope), I could see that the cracks that glowed had been filled with a clear substance. I could see air bubbles in the filler 🙁
So what I thought was a UV reactive part of the heart was actually UV reactive filler. Once I realized it was there, I could feel the difference in texture, which ruined the stone for me. I know other people will not mind, but I love looking at my collection of rocks under different wavelengths (of light) and at different magnifications. If you haven’t ever heard of the Private Eye Project–Kerry Ruef, look it up and have some fun with your collection of rocks.
I really loved the look of this heart, but the filler was a deal-breaker for me because it UV reacted and had air bubbles.
