This is one of the best bottled green teas I’ve tried. Very clean, refreshing taste with no sugar and no bitterness. Perfect to drink cold, and great for anyone who wants a healthy unsweetened option. I keep reordering — highly recommend!

BEGIN UPDATE, 09/25/2018:
I have been a DAILY consumer of this tea for years; I love it and I meant every word written below. Please read all the way through and decide for yourself whether or not to purchase it here. As I said, I have loved this tea for years and drink a bottle every single day. I have enjoyed the convenience of two-day shipping and having an active subscription to get regular deliveries. This item IS available to me locally, at a grocery store and at least one Asian market too, but Amazon pricing has always been lower and since it’s a heavy item (a case of 12 bottles weighs 12.675 lbs), I have been happily ordering here.
HOWEVER, something happened with my most recent order, that I felt needed to be shared. At least one bottle in my latest case was spoiled. There was some kind of slimy, fuzzy looking, mold-like substance floating in the bottom of the bottle. Gross! Especially because (since I can’t see through the green label) I found this stuff by drinking from the bottle before I knew something was wrong.
I believe this issue is caused by improper storage by Amazon before shipping (exposure to extreme temperatures could cause the plastic bottle to expand and contract, which could damage the seal – allowing mold to grow. Such damage might not be visible to the eye, as in my case. The same result could have happened due to improper handling in transit/shipping, related to temperature, but either way – this should not be happening to anyone paying good money for fresh, potable tea. It is also possible that the seal could have been damaged as a result of the cases of tea being packed in a box that is too heavy for the carrier to manage with care, so they drop it or handle it roughly because the weight is too much. Amazon needs to reconsider the packaging options for items like this!
No matter the cause, I see in previous reviews that I am not the first person to have this problem, it seems to have gone on ignored by Amazon for at least two years. Please don’t giv2 up on this wonderful tea, but you may want to consider sourcing it elsewhere, even direct from Ito En – to be assured of safety and quality. I tried to edit this review yesterday, but only managed to save the pictures. This is the text that explains why I removed a star from my original 5-star rating and, which goes with the pictures. Please note the “normal” bottle in the pictures for comparison; it’s the one with the darker color tea inside. I also included pictures of the inside of the contaminated bottle’s lid, showing something that shouldn’t be there too.
END OF UPDATE
I meant what I said in my title for this review; that’s why I subscribed to have this tea sent regularly to me. I take a bottle to work everyday. I love the stuff so much that I have FINALLY been able to kick my soda habit. HOWEVER, I feel the need to warn others about something that has been happening recently, with my last few shipments.
Amazon has been shipping my the Taiwanese version of the product instead of the one clearly marked “Product of Japan.” Now, with many things, that difference in manufacturing location would not bother me. But, in this case, it does. At first, I thought that the packaging had just been changed. The cases from Japan are in well-made, very sturdy boxes with handles, and the ones from Taiwan are half-box with shrink-wrap over top. Cheap and much more difficult to carry up to my second story apartment. I was prepared to accept the change in packaging without complaint – until I opened the first bottle of tea.
I wrote to Amazon about the packaging issue before I tasted the tea, and of course, did not see any improvement in the next shipment. It came from Taiwan too… disappointing. Amazon should listen to us more often.
I tasted something “off” about the tea when I opened the first bottle from the first Taiwanese case I received. (I didn’t even know it was from there at the time.) The different taste (I really can’t put my finger on what it was that got my attention, but it was distinctly different) caused me to look at the bottle more closely. When I saw the source, I realized that I wasn’t getting my beloved JAPANESE tea. I know, I know it’s still Ito En, which SHOULD mean it’s ok, and the same, but it’s not.
Still, It En Oi Ocha is the BEST green tea I have ever tasted, in spite of the difference in manufacturing locations, and/or quality control in Taiwan. I would have told you that I did not like green tea at all, only a short time ago. That is, UNTIL I found this green tea, and tasted it for what it really should be. Oi Ocha is heaven in a bottle.

Very good. I like the test.

My absolute favorite tea!! This tea is not everybody’s “cup of tea” because it’s bitter…it’s not sweet – thank goodness!!! I hate sweet tea and I can’t have caffeine – once I found this tea it’s become my drink of choice!!! It does still have some caffeine so I can only have 1 per day – I WISH they’d remove the caffeine and I’d drink them all day every day!!!

This is my afternoon pick-me-up. It’s unsweetened, high quality green tea. As someone that loves iced drinks, I love drinking this ice-cold. It tastes great and is only 5 calories. Not sure how much caffeine it has, but it’s definitely enough to get me going through the afternoon (post-lunch until past dinner). I absolutely love that Amazon sells this for so cheap (moreso than Costco)!! Will definitely be repurchasing.

Absolutely love, actually everyone in our household loves it (even my teenagers!).

I’m a big fan of green tea — especially unsweetened, clean-tasting blends — and this jasmine-infused offering from Ito En absolutely delivers. From the first sip, the delicate aroma of jasmine blossoms comes through beautifully, giving the tea a subtle floral lift that’s refreshing but never cloying. The green-tea base has that clean, vegetal grassy note you want: smooth and light, with a pleasant lingering finish that doesn’t bite or get bitter even as it cools.
Pros:
• Beautiful jasmine fragrance: The floral scent is gentle, natural, and balanced — not overpowering, but very noticeable in a good way.
• Clean, pure flavor: No sweetness or additives. Just straightforward green tea with a light jasmine presence. Good for unsweetened-tea purists or those who dislike sugary bottled teas.
• Very refreshing and thirst-quenching: Great cold or room-temperature; especially nice on hot days or after cooking (I often reach for a bottle after a brisket-rub session or air-fryer cleanup).
• Convenient packaging: Easy to keep stocked at home or in the fridge for when you want a quick, no-fuss drink.
Cons (very minor):
• Because it’s unsweetened and subtle, some might find it “too mild” if you’re used to strong iced teas or sweet drinks. But for me that’s part of the appeal.
• If you prefer bold or dark teas, this might feel a little light — but it’s not a flaw, just a matter of taste.
Overall: If you want a light, refreshing, no-nonsense green tea with a hint of floral jasmine — unsweetened and natural — Ito En’s Jasmine Green Tea is a solid pick. It’s well-balanced, not “over-teased,” and perfect for everyday hydration or as a palate-cleanser after meals. I’d buy it again.

The hint of jasmine adds just the right amount of taste to make me really enjoy this tea.
I tried Pure Leaf Green Tea and they were completely tasteless – not delicate but no discernible flavor.
I don’t add sugar or anything to my Iced Tea and so I appreciated the subtle flavor of the Ito

For years I have been buying Ito En Tea Oi Ocha Green Tea, Unsweetened, 16.9 Ounce (Pack of 12). It has always had the same taste and consistency, the same physical characteristics when shaken {this tea has NEVER before left a thick foamy residue at the top!}, the same bottle configuration, the same colors and print face for the label, everything has been exactly as advertised, tasting and seeming exactly as has each of my former orders of this green tea. This time I bought two boxes of ostensibly the same tea. Opening the first bottle this morning, I immediately noticed that the bottle was in a different shape, slimmer and longer and with a peculiar top. It smelled bad when it was opened. I took one sip, a terrible taste! I called Amazon for a refund or replacement. Their robot said no return was possible. I countered with I want my money refunded. Again, the robot says no return is possible. He then chirped “Is there anything else I can help you with?” Being one of their first Prime members, if I had to guess I’d say I’ve spent at least $50,000 with Amazon over the past twenty or so years. I’m sure their robot knows the amount to the penny. I am going to GROK on X and see what I can do to promulgate this problem. This is a defective product or simply {oh, the horrors} a stab at fostering a cheaper product on the public. This batch is “Made in Thailand.” All the others have been “Made in Taiwan.” Amazon hasn’t heard the last of me considering how crucial the nature of our food happens to be. {Copy to: Amazon file}

Ito En Tea Oi Ocha Green Tea in the Unsweetened 16.9 Ounce (Pack of 12) format has become somewhat of a staple in my pantry, but there’s a catch – I only buy it when it’s on a significant sale.
The taste of this green tea is undoubtedly on the bitter side, which might not be everyone’s cup of tea (pun intended). However, this bitterness is a testament to its authenticity and lack of added sugars or sweeteners. It’s a healthy option for those who appreciate the natural taste of green tea without any frills.
The value you get when it’s on sale is fantastic, making it an attractive choice for stocking up on a beverage that’s both refreshing and good for you. While it may not be my everyday go-to, it’s a welcome addition to my beverage rotation, especially when I’m in the mood for something pure and unadulterated.
In conclusion, Ito En Tea Oi Ocha Green Tea is a no-nonsense, unsweetened green tea option that leans on the bitter side but offers great value when purchased on sale. If you’re a fan of the inherent bitterness of green tea and appreciate the health benefits it provides, it’s worth giving this pack a try when you find it at a discounted price.

The Ito En Oi Ocha Green Tea is a refreshing and authentic unsweetened green tea. It has a clean, smooth taste without any bitterness, perfect for a healthy drink option. The 16.9 oz bottles are convenient for on-the-go. I love that it’s natural with no added sugar. I took off one star because it’s a bit pricey compared to other options, but the quality definitely makes it worth it. Will buy again!

One of our favorite teas to drink and have to either order from Amazon or Costco when they don’t have them in the store. Great flavor
Amarante –
The tea tastes good. The bottle material was a little light, so some bottles came out crooked, but it doesn’t affect the taste of the tea. The bottle material could be made thicker.

I’ve been drinking this for over 15 years and I love the bold taste. I was so happy to see it on Amazon. The price was right too. But just like muvywriter mentioned, the taste is different.
All the bottles I received from Amazon were made in Thailand and, honestly, they taste just like the light green version. I also have a bottle made in Taiwan that I bought elsewhere, and I did a side-by-side comparison. The issue is with the Thailand-made bottles, not the other way around.
Hopefully Ito En sees both my comment and muvywriter’s and looks into this. It’s already hard enough to find a place that carries this tea, so please make it easier for us to get the authentic flavor we’ve loved for years. Thank you.
