EXCELLENT quality and flavor OVERALL with proper preparation (depth of flavor depends on water quality, temperature of water, & length of brewing/steeping time). Not my 1st time ordering & purchasing loose leaf tea from Okiwari, Inc. They are well known for their fine Hoji cha. This brand is produced properly with strict quality controls in place. Mfg. packaging is sealed & sturdy (ideal for this type of tea). I consider the product quite a good value & reasonable. Used to ship from Japan via regular international airmail in padded envelope but now arrives via FED EX INT Priority. Has (thus far) arrived intact & fine condition. Store according to Okiwari recommendations.

My first impression upon opening this generous bag of tea and taking a deep breath was…. grass clippings? Luckily that impression did not last hahaha.
I bought this tea about 4 months ago, and I’m still not tired of it. I’ve wanted to try houjicha for a while after having it recommended by a friend, and this tea lives up to their promises. It’s very mellow, somewhat sweet, comforting, and best of all easy on my sensitive stomach. I very much appreciate this tea in the evenings when I’m not feeling particularly well. A little goes a long way too, which I also appreciate.

I write very few reviews but wanted to take the time to thank the growers for their efforts. As an organic grower for 30 years, I appreciate their intent. That aside, this is wonderful tea by my experience. The leaves are larger than any loose leaf I have purchased. As to taste, I likely depart from tea drinkers who brew for flavor. I do not mind the “bitterness” that comes from using very hot water and long brewing times because I drink green tea for the catechins and understand the hotter the water and longer the brewing time, the more catechins. But, as to the quality, this is excellent tea.

Excellent tea! The leaves looked fresh, were dark green and structuraly well preserved (very small amount of powder). The brew was likewise fresh tasting and delicious. This was the first time I’d ordered tea from ShiZen. I am very pleased with their product and have just placed my second order.

Has notes of sweet corn, spinach and grassy aroma. Beautiful green tea. can be brewed 3 times but the bag won’t tell you how so:
first brew: 1 minute
second brew: 30 seconds
third brew: 20 seconds.
just be mindful it’s a very strong flavor in the first brew as all the thiamine is coming out. the minute is mostly to fully open the tea which is why the other 2 brews are so short. the extraction happens immediately for those 2 brews. the last 2 brews are lighter and brighter, more sweet and less vegital.
