The Bestselling Beginner’s Guide to Runic Magic and Divination
The enigmatic nature of the runes is undeniable. Even the word rune once carried the meanings of “secret,” “magic,” “mystery,” and “incantation.” As symbols, the runes mean little to the untrained eye, yet the magical energies they activate can be used for positive change in your life.

In this guide, you’ll learn:
- The divinatory meanings and magical uses of each rune in the Elder Futhark
- Basic techniques of rune magic, including rune scripts, bind runes, and creating runic talismans
- How to make your own runes
- Instructions for rune-casting and interpreting the runes
- Detailed tables of correspondence for a handy magical and divinatory guide

I found this book to be thoughtfully written, engaging, and incredibly beginner-friendly. The author does a wonderful job of laying out the meanings of the runes without overwhelming the reader. If you’re just starting out or looking to deepen your spiritual connection to the runes, this is a solid place to begin.
What really stood out to me was how the book gently introduces both the mythological roots and historical context of the runes. There’s a clear respect for the Norse and Germanic traditions, and the connections to gods, cosmology, and ancient symbolism are woven in with care. While it doesn’t dive deeply into academic detail, it gives a meaningful glimpse into how runes were once used — not only for divination, but also for communication, ritual, and magic.
The writing feels accessible without being overly simplistic, and the tone is warm, reverent, and grounded. That said, it’s definitely written for those newer to the practice — more advanced readers may find it too introductory.
Overall, a lovely and soulful entry point into the mythic and energetic world of runes, ideal for seekers, mystics, and curious minds alike.

My boyfriend’s family is kind of big on Nordic culture. They have heritage from that part of the world and look the part as well. My boyfriend has been kind of leaning into the “Viking” thing at the will of his family and they all got matching runic tattoos. They also enjoy axe throwing and each have a ceremonial axe that they keep. I noticed he was really showing interest in learning more about runes so I bought him this book for Christmas. He flew through it in couple of hours and really enjoyed it. He held onto a lot of information from it and found out that the runic tattoo that his family “made up” actually might not be great 😅 and could be a binding rune for misfortune had it actually been done correctly on him and “spelled” correctly (the artist made a mistake and didn’t lengthen some lines which changed the character to either something different or jibberish?). Either way he really enjoys the book and it offered some cool insight into runes that he found useful.

Whether it be for personal information or to learn about to use this book will teach you about what I think is Norse runes. There are many cultures that used runes so you have determine which you want to use or learn about. There is Norse, Swedish, Germanic, Irish, Scottish and Wiccan that I know of so far. Each culture may take a rune and give it a different meaning. That’s a good reason to know which one you want to learn about. Just a note runes originated from Germany. They were to help people to learn to read and write. The Wiccan came in when they stole the runes and used them for magic. You might want to read up on that subject too.
